Images and videos can be generated. Voices can be cloned. Faces can be invented. What never happened can be created as if it did.
We live in an era of groundbreaking technology and rapid change that we can barely keep up with. Societal trust is eroding, misinformation is spreading, and fakes are becoming indistinguishable from reality. As artificial intelligence revolutionizes the world, reality is what we want to preserve.
We believe that facts begin with the physical world. A photograph was taken. A speech was recorded. A person was there.
For centuries, these traces of the physical world have formed the basis of our shared understanding of events. They have allowed us to document history, establish facts, and build trust in what we see, hear, and experience. But this is no longer enough.
History should not become an ever-changing hallucination. What happened yesterday should not be rewritten tomorrow simply because technology makes it possible to fabricate convincing evidence.
As generative AI capabilities expand rapidly, the gap between what is real and what is fabricated is becoming harder to close. We exist to close that gap.
We need a reliable layer of ground truth: a way to distinguish data originating in the physical world from content generated or altered by machines.
A foundation upon which journalists can report, institutions can decide, courts can evaluate evidence, citizens can form opinions, and societies can trust what they see. Reality needs infrastructure, and we are here to build it.
As proud Europeans, we believe in democracy, in freedom, and in societal trust. Trust in evidence. Trust in institutions. Trust in one another. Trust that our shared reality is not endlessly manipulable.
Reality cannot belong to a platform, a government, or a company. It must serve the public interest, and be grounded in rigorous research, transparent methods, reproducible evidence, and independence.
Our work is not about deciding what people should believe. It is about giving people better grounds on which to decide.
Our research goes beyond academic inquiry. It drives tangible change, giving society a reliable layer of ground truth to distinguish the reality before our eyes.
We don’t spot the fake: we certify the truth.
